By Bhatnagar
As many as 1405 hits to celebrate Navratras, Dussehra-Diwali in Oct 2008 motivate me to share with you Nov, 2008 Calendar as under --
Sunday , 2nd Nov ... Sri Ganesh Chaturthi that comes every month ...kid from Fourth generation ?
Thursday ,6th Nov ....GOPASHTMI i.e. the day Lord Krishna as a child started stepping out of Gokul to go to forest for cattle-gazing. Maa Yashoda- Nandbaba are very happy seeing their child growing & taking upon Himself the traditional responsibilities. Indirectly it's a boon to friends ( Sakha Dama-sumangal etc ) as now they can play whole day with Him ( verse 37, chapter XI, scanto 10) It's in forest only that He killed Vatsasur , Bakasur , Aghasur etc. Brahamaji gets fascinated by His childlike , playful activities & decides to take away cows etc ( chapters 13 to 15 of same scanto ) . Those having Deity Balgopal in their pooja-room may offer special Makhan-mishri bhog today in this celebration.
Friday ,7th Nov , Akshay Naumi .....millions are reaching from different States of India , even world for joint Parikarma of Mathura -Vrindavan that will take around 6 hours. This rare incident takes place only once a year so to those , who can , is a unique opportunity for Divine Parikarma !
From Sunday ( 9th Nov ) New Marriages / entrance into new house etc will start as it is DEVOTHAN or PRABHODHINI EKADASI in celebration of getting up of Lord Narayana after 6 months of Devshayani Ekadasi. It's day of Sri Tulsi-Bhagwan Vishnu vivah also. So in your home , please
i) be ready in the morning & perform Tulsi-Lord Vishnu marriage just like Rukmani-vivah in Srimad Bhagwat Saptah
ii) in the same way as we marry our daughters / sisters .
That is , enjoy grand feat after marriage !
Indians give a lot of spiritual importance to the month of Kartik that started from Sharad Poornima (14th Oct ) and would end on Kartik-poornima on 13th Nov .One specialty of Kartik month is to light Diya ( every evening ) in front of plant Tulsi . As only few days are left , all are requested to observe it most religiously . Sri Tulsi-pooja from 14th Oct to 13th Nov 2008 . Glory of this sacred plant is great it will be so kind of a visitor here if he / she can search same on Net & share with us all for common good.
As to why we do worship Tulsi ?, poojay Swami Chidanandaji of DLS , Rishikesh writes as under --
"Either in the front, back or central courtyard of most Indian homes there is a tulasi-matham-an altar bearing a tulasi plant. In the present day apartments too, many maintain a potted tulasi plant. The lady of the house lights a lamp, waters the plant, worships and circumambulates it. The stem, leaves, seeds and even the soil, which provides it a base, are considered holy. A tulasi leaf is always placed in the food offered to the Lord It is also offered to the Lord during poojas, especially to Lord Vishnu and His incarnations.
1.
Why do we worship the tulasi ?
In Sanskrit, tulanaa naasti athaiva tulasi - that which is incomparable (in its qualities) is the tulasi . For Indians it is one of the most sacred plants. In fact it is known to be the only thing used in worship, which once used, can be washed and reused in pooja as it is regarded so self-purifying.
As one story goes, Tulasi was the devoted wife of Shankhachuda, a celestial being. She believed that Lord Krishna tricked her into sinning. So she cursed him to become a stone ( shaaligraama). Seeing her devotion and adherence to righteousness, the Lord blessed her saying that she would become the worshipped her saying that she would become the worshipped plant, tulasi that would adorn His head. Also that all offerings would be incomplete without the tulasi leaf - hence the worship of tulasi.
She also symbolizes Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. Those who wish to be righteous and have a happy family life worship the tulasi. Tulasi is married to the Lord with all pomp and show as in any wedding. This is because according to another legend, the Lord blessed her to be His consort.
Satyabhama once weighed Lord Krishna against all her legendary wealth. The scales did not balance till a single tulasi leaf was placed along with the wealth on the scale by Rukmini with devotion. Thus the tulasi played the vital role of demonstrating to the world that even a small object offered with devotion more to the Lord than all the wealth in the world. The tulasi leaf has great medicinal value and is used to cure various ailments, including the common cold.
Yanmule sarvatirthaani
Yannagre sarvadevataa
Yanmadhye sarvavedaascha
Tulasi taam namaamyaham
I bow to the tulasi, at whose base are all the holy places, at whose top reside all the deities and in whose middle are all the Vedas."
If Vrindavan devotees have already celebrated Sharad-poornima on 14th Oct ...Sri Bihariji Darshan on Sharad-poornima ( TUESDAY , 14th Oct ), Bengalis celevrate Kartik poornima on 13th Nov , Thursday as RAAS-poornima . Due to special significance of Kartik month , all will do Parikarma of Radha-Damodarji ( Vrindavan ) while it Sri Goverdhan rush of devotees will be unprecedented. Just enjoy this Maha-kumbh with own eyes !
PS During my personal visit to Vrindavan on Sri Goverdhan-pooja day (Bhai-dooj at Sri Banke Bihari Colony only on 30th Oct) , I witnessed that the 84 kos Braj Parikarma covering whole of Braj , Mathura , Goverdhan , Barsana , Nandgaon , Vrindavan and Gokul that started on Sharad Poornima,14th Oct is in full swing & will take a week to complete ... Brajbhoomi Mohini does have 2 major , 7 sub-parts and 14 links
At Vrindavan , ASHTYAAM-lilas are also taking place . What is ASHTYAAM-lila ? ASHTYAAM-lila means covering dawn to dusk activities of Lord Radha-Krishna in the most Divine way .
